Spring Cleaning with Homemade Household Cleaners
March 27th, 2012
With the gorgeous warm weather we’ve had the last few weeks (of course, as I write this it’s 43 degrees), I’ve been in a mood to unload from winter and start fresh for spring. For me, this means eating lighter, dressing lighter (though I may have packed away the winter coats too soon!), and, most importantly, spring cleaning! It seems like many of our friends and customers are feeling the same! We at Dragonfly Soap Works have had several requests for recipes for all-natural homemade household cleaners. Since I love to share what works well for me, below are several of my favorite simple-to-make-at-home household cleaning solutions.
Before we get to the good stuff, you may be wondering why I (and why you should) take the time to make homemade household cleaners when I can purchase a multitude of cleaning products at the grocery store, dollar store, or Wal-Mart. Aside from the fact that they’re simple to make and really inexpensive, homemade cleaners are healthier for the planet and for you.
Did you know… (special thanks to my friend Julianne for the facts below)
…commercial window cleaners contain dimethyl benzl ammonium chloride, which the EPA considers a pesticide?
…chlorine bleach was used as a choking agent during World War I because it attacks the lungs, throat, and nose to cause what is called “dry land drowning?”
…many all-purpose cleaners contain chlorinated materials as well as petroleum-based solvents that are considered neurotoxins and are central nervous system depressants?
…there are 17,000 chemicals approved for use in common household cleaners, and only 30% have been tested for safety?
Yuck! So, with just a handful of easy-to-find and inexpensive ingredients, you can make a variety of effective cleaners and start on your spring cleaning today!
